It's no secret that Stevie played his amps cranked and preferred a cleaner sound from the front end allowing you to hear more power tube breakup. This kit uses a JJ 5751 for V1 which is in-between an ECC81 and an ECC83S in gain. This provides more headroom for the Normal channel. We follow that up with a standard ECC83S for V3 and a balanced ECC83S for the phase inverter in V2. For the power section we use and a warmer grade of JJ EL84's and a JJ EZ81 Rectifier tube.

The Balanced ECC83S is located in V2 which is the middle of the three pre amp tube positions. The 5751 is located in V1 which is physically farthest from the EL84's.

Combo amps are very hard on tubes because of vibrations which can cause tube rattle with any brand of tube. If your amp is the combo version and you play by yourself in a quiet environment or record with your amp you may want to consider using the EuroDamper tube damper rings for the EZ81 and the two power tubes. These are available in the "Related Products” tab as a set of three. These will greatly decrease tube rattle.

These are cathode bias amps with no adjustment as are most all 18 and 20 watt Clones. The amount of clean headroom you’ll get from the power section is somewhat dictated by the grade of power tube used. A cooler grade of EL84’s will give you more clean headroom, whereas a warmer grade will give you earlier breakup.
