Stevie liked playing loud and preferred a little cleaner sound from the front end allowing you to hear more power tube breakup. This is the SRV Low Output Retube Kit for the Marshall 1974X amp and most all 18 and 20 watt Clones. This kit uses a JJ 5751 for V1 which is in-between an ECC81 and an ECC83S in gain. This provides more headroom for the Normal channel. We follow that up with a standard ECC83S for V3 and a balanced ECC83S for the phase inverter in V2. The power section contains a matched pair of JJ EL844's to drop the overall output a couple decibels and a JJ EZ81 Rectifier tube.

The Balanced ECC83S is located in V2 which is the middle of the three pre amp tube positions. The 5751 is located in V1 which is physically farthest from the EL84's.

Combo amps are very hard on tubes because of vibrations which can cause tube rattle with any brand of tube. If your amp is the combo version and you play by yourself in a quiet environment or record with your amp you may want to consider using the EuroDamper tube damper rings for the EZ81 and the two power tubes. These are available in the "Related Products” tab as a set of three. These will greatly decrease tube rattle.

These are cathode bias amps with no adjustment as are most all 18 and 20 watt Clones. The JJ EL844’s are a drop in replacement for EL84’s. The EL844’s will reduce the power output of the amp by a decibel or two.
