Want more gain? Are you a real Gainiac? This is our High Gain Retube kit for the Dr. Z Z-Lux Combo Amps. It includes a matched quad of the JJ 6V6S for power, one ECC81 to replace the 12AT7/6201 in V3 along with three High Gain ECC83S's, with one of them balanced for the phase inverter in V6, and two standard ECC83S for V4 and V5.

The ECC81 is located in V3. The High Gain Balanced ECC83S is located in V6 closest to the power tubes. The other two High Gain tubes are for V1 and V2. The standard ECC83S go into V4 and V5.

Combo amps are very hard on tubes because of vibrations which can cause tube rattle with any brand of tube. If your amp is the combo version and you play by yourself in a quiet environment or record with your amp you may want to consider using the EuroDamper tube damper rings for the power tubes. These are available in the "Related Products” tab as a set of four large dampers and will help decrease tube rattle.

The preamp tube positions are as follows:

V1: First Stage,

V2: Tone Stack Driver,

V3: Reverb Driver,

V4: Reverb Recovery,

V5: Tremolo,

V6: Phase Inverter

These amps are cathode biased, there is no bias adjustment to be made. Typically in a cathodoe biased amp, the amount of clean headroom you’ll get from the power section is somewhat dictated by the grade of power tube used. A cooler grade of power tubes will give you more clean headroom, whereas a warmer grade will give you earlier breakup. However, in these amps the power tubes are set to run very hot and already have a good quantity of natural breakup, we usually pick out a cooler grade of power tube when we ship our retube kits.
